The Democratic Republic of Congo is battling the deadliest Ebola outbreak on record, caused by the Bundibugyo virus. Africa CDC reported 5,372 deaths on November 2 among 10,668 confirmed infections. The outbreak, announced in May, has spread across 8 Congolese districts, particularly Ituri and North Kivu, with a fatality rate approaching 49%. Related infections have also been reported in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and France. Armed conflict, attacks on health care workers and inadequate medical infrastructure impede containment. There is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for bee species. On November 4, the World Health Organization announced that 2 experimental vaccines, developed by Oxford and Moderna, would be added to clinical trials pending regulatory approval.
