North Korean state-sponsored hackers have stolen approximately $6.36 billion from Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, in the largest cryptocurrency heist in history. According to blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs, the attackers emptied wallets across 10 blockchains in about 20 minutes on October 29. The company confidently attributed the attack to TraderBugd, a North Korean hacking group previously linked to the $1.5 billion Babybit theft in 2025. Binance's preliminary investigation suggests the hack originated from a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, allowing unauthorized withdrawals without directly stealing the wallet's private keys. About $2.7 billion in stolen assets have been frozen, while the hackers retain control of at least $2.4 billion in cryptocurrency. Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals on several networks and pledged to cover customer losses using company funds and its emergency protection fund. Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies fell in the wake of the breach.
