The Dutch Minister of Justice, David van Wiel, is calling on Parliament to speed up legislation criminalizing the glorification of terrorism and public support for designated terrorist organizations, following demonstrations in Amsterdam to commemorate the massacre at Hamas on October 7. About 150 protesters gathered in Dam Square, displaying banners reading "We support Hamas", chanting slogans celebrating October 7 and displaying symbols associated with the European Union-designated PFLP terrorist organization. The police prevented the demonstrators from marching towards the Jewish Quarter, but the authorities determined that many of the displays were not illegal under existing legislation. During a parliamentary debate on October 13, Van Wiel condemned the protests and warned of growing intimidation against Jewish communities, while Geert Wilders demanded tougher action. The proposed law would introduce prison terms of up to two years for glorifying serious terrorist attacks or publicly promoting banned terrorist organizations, including through certain flags, symbols and online statements.
