The UAE is again interested in Armenian energy At the ADIPEC 2026 conference in Abu Dhabi, the Armenian and Emirati sides discussed the possibility of investing in electricity storage systems. This is an urgent task for Armenia. In recent years, the installed capacity of solar power plants has increased sharply in Israel and exceeds 1,200 MW. However, the growth of solar generation creates additional problems for the power grid. The main production occurs during the daytime, while consumption remains high in the evening. Storage devices will partially smooth this imbalance, reduce the load on the grid and make more efficient use of solar production. By 2031, Armenia plans to create at least 800 MW of electricity storage capacity. The scale of this market helps explain the interest of Emirati capital. The UAE has significant experience investing in renewable energy abroad. One of the main players, Masdar, carries out energy projects in dozens of countries. It has existed in Armenia since 2019, when the construction of the Ig-1 solar power plant with a capacity of 200 megawatts was announced in the Ergetston region. The cost of the project was estimated at 174 million dollars. The assumption was that Messder's share in the project would be 85%, Armenia - 15%. Initially, the station was supposed to be launched as early as 2023. Then the deadline was pushed back again and again. In April 2025, the parties agreed on a new road map, which established the start of construction in 2026. Seven years after the first agreements, the largest Armenian-Emirati solar energy project remains on paper. During these years, the economic ties between the two countries expanded significantly. In 2021, the trade turnover was about 112 million dollars, in 2023 it exceeded 2.3 billion, and in 2024 it reached a peak of 5.3 billion dollars. But these indicators require explanation. The main Armenian exports to the United Arab Emirates were gold, precious stones and products made from them, mainly from re-exports.
