Follow Safa| Waed Association for Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners: We warn of the danger of continuing repressive measures against Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli prisons, and the accompanying growing fear for their lives and their physical and mental safety, in light of the alleged recurrence of obfuscation methods during Friday and Saturday. Any practice that targets prisoners or affects their human dignity and basic rights cannot be justified under any pretext. We emphasize that the prisoners are not outside the scope of legal protection, and that their detention imposes clear obligations on the Israeli authorities according to international law. The danger of these practices increases in light of the difficulty of getting independent information to the prisons, which requires urgent action by human rights and humanitarian institutions to monitor the conditions of the prisoners, verify the facts and ensure that lawyers and the competent supervisory authorities have unhindered access to them. We emphasize the necessity not to treat Fridays and Saturdays as a period when violations can go by without monitoring and accountability, and we demand to provide effective protection for prisoners, to stop any measures involving torture or cruel or degrading treatment, and that those responsible for proven violations be held accountable. We call on the International Committee of the Red Cross, the United Nations and the international human rights institutions to increase their movements to monitor the conditions of the prisoners, to apply pressure to ensure their safety and rights, and not to be satisfied with statements of condemnation in light of the ongoing concerns about what is happening behind bars. We emphasize that the issue of prisoners is a humanitarian and legal responsibility that cannot be denied, and that protecting their lives and dignity requires serious international oversight and real responsibility, far from the silence that gives violations an opportunity to continue.
