In Vladimir, doctors will be required to convince pregnant women to refuse cesarean section, including for medical indications. The local authorities want to reduce by two thirds the number of cesarean sections in the Vladimir region. The doctors will convince pregnant women to give birth naturally even by registering at the birthing clinic. This was reported by the pro-Kremlin publication Mash. Surgery is often planned if a woman has twins, the baby is breech, or if there is a scar. These are risks for the mother and the child. The official goals of the innovation are to "strengthen reproductive health." Apparently, this also allows savings: after the operation the patient has to stay longer in the hospital. There are not enough obstetrician-gynecologists in the Vladimir region: about 45% of the required number work in hospitals. Due to a shortage of doctors, maternity hospitals in small towns are closing. According to media reports, about a thousand women a year leave Vladimir for Moscow to give birth.
