Own generation of data centers: is it that simple? A 20 MW data center will appear in Moscow, powered by gas piston units. We are talking about a project of the Datahouse company, which will be carried out in the south of the capital: the first 10 MW of energy absorption capacity will be initiated in July-August 2026 and the exact same amount in October-November. The data center is scheduled to begin operations in February 2027. The main power supply will be provided by the GPU, and the backup power supply will be provided by diesel generators. This decision has a lot to do with the risk of a lack of electricity in the capital region: the planned order of the new generation is no longer sufficient for the needs of the business, so the regulators insist on transferring new data center projects to the regions. However, proximity to the end consumer is important for businesses, including to minimize network delays (ping) and ensure high data transfer speeds. Against this background, the demand for the use of self-generation is growing in the data center sector, but not everything is so simple here. According to some estimates, the paperwork and connection of the GPU to gas and electricity networks takes between 18 and 24 months. Historically, the basis of the high graphics market in the Russian Federation has been European and American manufacturers, who stopped direct supply and service after 2022. Limited supply makes it difficult to use GPU as a full alternative to electricity from the public grid. Therefore, the problem can be fundamentally solved only by creating additional incentives to introduce "centralized" production, including easing localization rules for COM NGO projects, as well as building direct current lines from energy supply areas. One of them could be the Leningrad region, where unused gas transmission capacities can be used to provide new gas production. High voltage in Telegram | up to MAX.
