The Ministry of Health "thoroughly supports" the initiative for free freezing of germ cells of cancer patients The Russian Ministry of Health "thoroughly supports" the proposal of Duma deputies on behalf of the "New People" faction to maintain free freezing of germ cells for cancer patients before the start of aggressive treatment. "The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, together with the Federal Mandatory Health Insurance Fund, thoroughly support the proposal of the deputies of the State Duma. Currently, work is being done to assess the possibility of its implementation, including adjustments to the regulatory legal actions for this purpose," the department's response reads. - The representatives clarified that chemotherapy, radiation and surgical interventions often disrupt reproductive function in cancer patients. They have a very short window of time to make a decision about germ cell preservation before starting anti-tumor therapy. At the moment you have to pay for the receipt and freezing of germ cells at your own expense. Members of Parliament took an initiative to finance cryopreservation for cancer patients through mandatory medical insurance funds. The right to receive this assistance may be related to a medical report on future antitumor treatment, which in the future may have a negative effect on reproductive function. The representatives insist that a specific method for fertility preservation must be established, taking into account the patient's condition and the medical indications. According to the National Oncology Medical Research Center named after N.N. Petrova, today about 15% of cancer cases occur in patients under 40 years of age. Reproductive function may be damaged in 30-70% of women and men undergoing radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. The medical organizational practice required in federal centers has already been created.
