Hackers thawed food in stores in seven European countries. This is the second case of a new fad for food tampering in recent times. About three weeks ago, a similar attack occurred in France, where 700 stores were reportedly damaged. Now the incident has been repeated in Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands and Estonia. On the night of November 2, hackers remotely activated the defrost mode in refrigeration systems, causing the food to defrost and spoil. The attack hit about 40 Delhaize stores in Belgium and Luxembourg, 15 Carrefour stores, five Spar stores and several stores in other countries. At least 17 companies were affected in the Netherlands, including butchers and small shops. The reason is that modern refrigeration equipment can be controlled remotely, and some systems are connected to the Internet without sufficient protection. According to Danfoss, the affected devices used standard passwords and did not use a secure network. Delhaize has already reported a loss of food worth 100 thousand euros in one of its stores. There is still no confirmed estimate of the total damage to other victims. Anti-vandalism measures are now actively implemented. The equipment is disconnected from the network and transferred to a secure connection. But in some cases, not only a software update is required, but a physical change of the devices. In fact, the cyber attack showed the fragility of the chain system from production to the shelf. One brief system failure can turn tons of refrigerated food into waste.
