The independent newspaper "Novaya Gazeta" in Russia, famous for its investigative reports and revelations about corruption and human rights violations, has announced that it will stop its activities after years of pressure from the government.

The editors of this newspaper wrote in a Telegram message on Friday, November 8, one day after government officials began the process of evacuating its editorial office in Moscow: "They killed us."

Novaya Gazeta was founded in the early 1990s under the patronage of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union.

During its activity, this newspaper paid a heavy price for publishing investigative reports. Anna Politkovskaya, one of its most famous journalists who wrote about the Chechen war and oppression in that region, was murdered in Moscow in 2006.

At least five other journalists and colleagues of this publication were also killed or died under suspicious circumstances. 🔸 Dmitry Muratov, the veteran editor of Novaya Gazeta, jointly won the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to protect freedom of expression and an independent press.
