Human rights sources in Iran report that the death sentence of Amirhasan Akbari Monfard, a 23-year-old political prisoner, has been confirmed by the Supreme Court. Amir Hassan Akbari Monfard was sentenced to death in August of this year on the charge of "treason" through his membership in the Popular Mujahideen organization, and now, about two months after the initial verdict, the Supreme Court confirmed and notified him of this verdict. According to Sharia law, "rebellion" means taking up arms against Islamic rule and rebelling against it, which is punishable by death. Mr. Akbari Monfard was arrested on the last day of January last year, in connection with the assassination case of Muhammad Mukisa and Ali Razini, two justice system judges, who were killed at their workplace the day before. Meanwhile, the transfer of another political prisoner sentenced to death to solitary confinement raised concerns about the possibility of carrying out his sentence. 27-year-old Reza Zangana has been imprisoned in Ghazalhasar prison since April 3 this year on the charge of "spying for Israel" and was sentenced to death.
