US President Donald Trump announced that in a conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, he agreed to temporarily open the way for the export of Russian diesel fuel to markets in the US and the world in order to lower fuel prices. On Friday, October 17, he said that Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel and send another 500,000 tons and then 1 million tons to the market in November. Trump said that additional supplies would be made in a short period of time. The US Treasury also issued a temporary general license allowing the sale, supply and import of Russian diesel until April 18, 1406. This exemption from sanctions was announced while Washington had previously imposed restrictions aimed at reducing Moscow's energy revenues for the war against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called this decision "a gift to Putin" and said that allowing the sale of Russian oil products is an investment in a war that must end, not continue.
