Trump's words about Iran's possible attack on two large cities in California caused reactions
🔸 Donald Trump, the President of the United States, on Monday, October 13, at a gathering of his supporters in the state of Nebraska, said that Iran may be able to "target" large American cities such as Los Angeles or San Diego.
🔸 These statements led to a sharp reaction from the Democratic officials in California and even some Republicans.
At a political rally in rural Nebraska, Trump spoke about the economic costs of the war for the United States and said he was determined to achieve a "big victory" because, he said, such a victory proves that the actions taken by the United States were correct.
Speaking to supporters in Grand Island, Nebraska, he said: "And remember again, in the case of war, it's temporary, it's a little high; it's a small price to pay."
Trump was apparently referring to the rise in the prices of fuel, fertilizers and other commodities attributed to war-induced disruptions in energy markets. He added: "It's a very small price to pay to keep the world safe, to keep our country safe. They (Iran) can target the city. Let them target Los Angeles, let them target San Diego. It's a very small price and it will end soon."
🔸 The President of the United States continued to say about the conflict with Iran: "Basically, it's almost over. But it will end very soon and in any form, it will end."
Gavin Newsom, the Democratic Governor of California, called the President of the United States "dangerous".
He wrote on the X social network: "After sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump now says our foreign enemies should target Los Angeles and San Diego." Newsom, who is one of the possible candidates for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2028 presidential election, released a video of Trump's speech in Nebraska, along with a reference to the US president's previous statements about sending military forces to Los Angeles and other cities to fight crime and enforce immigration laws.
Karen Bass, the Democratic mayor of Los Angeles and a former representative of the US Congress, also criticized Trump's words.
Bass said in a statement: "The President of the United States has suggested that a foreign government launch a ground attack on Los Angeles. His statements against our city are dangerous and may endanger our security."
Todd Gloria, the Democratic mayor of San Diego, also wrote in X: "We are never 'small price.' Keep our city away from careless declarations of war.
Jim Desmond, a Republican politician from California who is running for a seat in the US House of Representatives, also distanced himself from Trump's statements. He wrote on Channel X: "I strongly disagree with President Trump's statements. America must stand up against Iran and protect its interests, but the first responsibility of the commander-in-chief of the militant armed forces is to protect the American people and our land.
Desmond added: "No American city should be ignored and no American family should be treated as collateral damage."
