Yemeni government forces "recaptured" areas around Bab el-Mandeb with Saudi help.
The Yemeni government announced that its military forces, with Saudi support, recaptured the areas and the gulf around the Bab el-Mandeb strait to the city of Mocha from Iran-backed forces on Monday, October 13.
According to news agencies, the most intense exchanges of fire in the past two days occurred in southwestern Yemen, in the coastal area surrounding the strait, as well as the hills surrounding the city of Taiz.
The Shiite Houthi forces supported by the Islamic Republic managed to capture most of the high areas surrounding the strait last month, an event that further endangered Saudi crude oil sales following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Reuters, on Monday, following the "lightning advance" of official Yemeni government forces, the Houthis also announced that they bombed at least four key points, including the Sultan Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and the Aramco refinery. Reuters wrote that it could not independently verify this claim.
However, the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority announced that King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Jizan, Saudi Arabia, and the Najran International Airport were targets of two ground attacks on Monday evening, resulting in three people sustaining superficial injuries and limited material damage.
The events of the past 24 hours in Yemen occurred after the head of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council announced on Sunday, Mehr 12, the start of a large-scale military operation against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels with the aim of recapturing areas controlled by this group.
