A woman sentenced to death in the United States was saved after two fatal injections
Krista Pike, sentenced to death three decades ago for murdering a classmate, survived two doses of a lethal injection, Tennessee state prison officials say.
Her execution was to be the first execution of a woman in the state of Tennessee in more than 200 years.
Krista Pike was sentenced to death for her role in the torture and murder of 19-year-old Colin Selmer in Knoxville in 1995.
In January 1995, when he was 18, Pike, along with his 17-year-old friend and another man, dragged Selmer, a classmate of theirs at the Job Corps vocational training center in Knoxville, to a wooded area, tortured and killed him.
The violent nature of this murder, including the removal of part of the victim's skull as a souvenir, was widely reported in the American media at the time.
