🔸 The "Global Witness" organization announced in a report that at least 124 defenders of the earth and environment will be killed in 2025 worldwide; this figure brings the recorded number of dead and missing from this group to 2375 people since 2012.
According to this organization, 85% of recorded murders occurred in Latin America.
🔸 Colombia is the deadliest country for environmental and land defenders for the fourth consecutive year with 39 deaths, and Brazil in second place with 26 deaths. Honduras and the Philippines each recorded 12 murders, Mexico 10 and Guatemala eight.
More than three-quarters of the victims were small farmers, indigenous or African.
Global Witness said more than half of the killings were related to land disputes and at least a third were attributed to organized crime or hired killers.
🔸 The organization emphasized that the actual statistics are probably higher, because it is not possible to register and verify all the cases.
