Matthew Whittaker, the US representative to NATO, says Iran aims to "create chaos and impose costs" and NATO member states should increase their ability to deal with combined attacks and protect critical infrastructure.

In an interview with Ray Furlong, Radio Free Europe/Radio Release's senior international correspondent, in response to a question about Iran's combined threats in Europe, he said that NATO has already intercepted missiles fired from Iran and used its capabilities in the Mediterranean and Turkey to defend the alliance's territory.

Whittaker said that the member states should invest in increasing resilience and strengthening their infrastructures and added that the first action in a possible future conflict would not necessarily be the crossing of military forces across the borders, but could be a combined ground attack on critical infrastructures.

The US representative in NATO stressed that this alliance must be ready to deal with attacks on critical infrastructure in addition to its military defense capabilities.
