Kyogan came to Teacher Isen and asked to teach him Zen. However, Issan told him, “I really have nothing to convey to you. Everything I say is mine and will never be yours. "

Frustrated, Kyujen decided to burn all his notes and notes and withdraw completely from the world to spend the rest of his life in peace and quiet. He thought, "What's the use of studying Zen if it's so hard to understand and if it's so hard to get explanations from someone else. I will be a simple homeless monk, uninterested in the teacher's thoughts, which are so difficult to understand. He went away and built a hut in the village. One day he was sweeping his garden, and a thrown pebble hit a bamboo. This sudden sound woke him up. The joy was boundless. Suddenly, Kyogan understood the kindness of Issan, who refused to give clear instructions because he understood that what happened to him would not have happened if Issan was not kind enough to explain things.
