Following research into recruitment problems, we found several foreign publications on Russian army losses in Ukraine. We do not claim this information is completely reliable, but it differs too sharply from the official data of the Russian Ministry of Defense. We simply do not have the right to ignore this information. In particular, The Economist has radically changed its assessment of Russia's losses in the war against Ukraine. Analysts estimated the number of killed Russian troops at 374,000-770,000 people, and total losses, including the wounded, at 1.4-2.1 million, which differs significantly from previous estimates. Since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, between 374,000 and 770,000 Russian troops could have died. These data are provided by The Economist in a new study. Taking into account the wounded, total losses of the Russian army, according to the publication, amount to 1.4-2.1 million people. Compared to the May study, the lower bound of the estimated death toll rose by 94,000, and the upper bound by 252,000. The calculations are based on a statistical model combining data from Western intelligence, military departments and independent researchers with information on the intensity of combat. At the same time, the general situation at the front has changed. According to The Economist, over the past three months, Ukraine has received a net territorial gain of 73 sq. km, which compensates for about half of Russia's territorial gains since the beginning of the year. At the same time, the intensity of combat has reached a maximum for the entire war. Against the background of slowing progress, Russian forces have increased long-range strikes in Ukraine and stepped up operations. The number of attacks at a distance of more than 100 km from the front line increased from 130 in June to 453 in September. In the month preceding October 23, the strikes affected 290 civilian infrastructure facilities, killing at least 62 people. At least 46 attacks on energy facilities were also recorded in October. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, since the beginning of 2026, Russia has launched more than 56,000 drones across the country - 35% more than in the same period last year.
