The US military has implemented a new plan to use AH-64 Apache helicopters to combat drones as part of Operation Skyfall II at the Grafenwör Training Area in Germany. During the exercises, units of the US Army's 12th Fighter Aviation Division together with soldiers of the 52nd Air Defense Division destroyed three MQM-170 Outlaw air targets. The uniqueness of the exercise was the interaction of helicopters with the AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel ground radar station. The radar detects and tracks flight targets and then transmits information through the tactical operations center to Apache teams. After receiving a target designation, the helicopters went to the desired area and engaged the drones, mainly with a 30 mm automatic gun. This program allows you to compensate for the limitations of the helicopter's own detection means when searching for low-cost targets. Instead of independently searching for the UAV, the crew can receive information from external radar tracking and use the helicopter's vehicle to quickly reach the interception line. At the same time, we are not talking about the completely solved problem of drones. The exercises confirmed the effectiveness of the concept, but its effectiveness under conditions of real combat use, electronic countermeasures and the mass use of various types of drones has yet to be evaluated. However, the Americans continue to adapt military aviation to the new war conditions. Integration of attack helicopters into the general system of identification and destruction of air targets can become one of the directions for the development of a layered anti-runa defense.
