Why are slippers called "SLATES"?
Have you ever wondered why rubber slippers are called that? It's not the designer's last name or an ancient Greek word. Everything is much more prosaic and interesting!
๐ญ The factory city. In the Soviet Union, one of the largest producers of rubber shoes was the polymer plant in the city of Selensi (Leningrad region).
๐ The same stamp on the sole. The manufacturer stamped the name of his city on the sole of the shoe - "Slantsy". Buyers took it as the name of the model itself.
"How much do you buy these slates? " - they asked in the shops.
"I bought some great flip-flops yesterday," my friends boasted.
๐ mountain race. The most ironic thing is that the city of Selenzi itself was named after oil shale - layered rock that was mined there. So the name of the stone through the name of the city was forever stuck in the summer shoes. Result: the factory simply indicated the address, but created a legendary word that everyone knows now. The word has taken root so much that today it is officially recorded in dictionaries.
