Petrichor ๐ง
You must have smelled the incomparable fragrance more than once after a long-awaited rain, but you hardly knew it had a name.
The word was invented by scientists in 1964, combining the Greek roots petra ("stone") and ichor ("ichor" - the golden blood of the gods in mythology).
In fact, this smell is the result of a complex chemical reaction. During the drought, plants release oils that are absorbed into the soil and in contact with raindrops are released into the air in aerosol form, creating the same "smell of freshness".
