And it all started with... soup for tired Parisians.

The word "restaurant" comes from the French "masadan" - "to restore, to revive". In the 18th century in Paris, merchants offered "restaurants" to tired passers-by - that is, restorative soup (usually made of meat or bones). It was not food, but a medicine for strength.

Later, establishments that served such soup began to be called "restaurants". Then the menu expanded - starters, wine and lunches appeared. This is how the "recovery place" evolved into what we know today.
