Where did the word "scandal" come from?

Today there is noise, a quarrel, a strong confrontation. But it all started... with the drama of the church.

The word came to Russian from the Greek "scandalon" - it is the name of the stone on which one stumbles. In the Bible it is a metaphor: something that causes a person to "fail" in faith.

Then the meaning changed: "scandal" is something that causes public condemnation, a "stumbling block" in morality. That's exactly how it was used in the old days - not for screaming in the kitchen, but for a sin that was talked about loudly.

Only in the 19th century did the word begin to mean any noisy conflict - from a fight in a tavern to a fight in high society.
