"Rejection": how is that?

This expression has been in use in Russian for a very long time. This means postponing the resolution of the issue for an indefinite period.

According to one version, the phrase came to us from the German language and is a translation of the phrase "etwas in die lange Truhe legen". This expression appeared in the 15th century and meant "to put something into a long chest". By "long chest" they meant a coffin - meaning to put something down forever and forget it.

In the 18th century, the expression took another form: etwas auf die lange Bank schieben - "to move to a long bench". At that time, German courts used long boxes to store cases, which were also used as benches for visitors. Uninteresting cases or cases where a poor person was the plaintiff were pushed to the farthest end of the bench.
