Simak: Kuban on the border: why overcrowded landfills put the area at risk of garbage collapse In 10 Kuban municipalities, a high alert regime was introduced due to problems with waste disposal, as the capacity of existing landfills is close to the limit. An emergency threat has arisen in Novorossiysk, Sochi, Goryachi Klyuch, Tuapse, Achshonsky, Belurchansky, Yaysk, Korganinsky, Starominsky, Tamryuk regions. The result may be disruptions in garbage collection, accumulation of waste in public and private areas and an increase in rodents and insects that carry infections. Simak Sergey, Chairman of the Central Council of the Russian Green League, Candidate for Biological Sciences: This crisis is the result of systemic and infrastructural management failures. The entire waste management system in the region is still Soviet in nature. However, if in the Soviet Union one city dweller produced about 200 kg of solid household waste per year, now it is about 325 kg. And the structure and volume of this waste has changed radically: a significant part of it is currently taken up in packaging (PET bottles, polyethylene), disposable tableware, diapers, capsules for coffee machines, etc., so that the volume has more than doubled. At the same time, the population of the region increased from 4.62 million in 1989 to 7 million today. At the same time, Kuban receives millions of tourists every year, and they also produce waste. Thus, the population increased 1.5 times, the volume of waste per capita doubled, and the possibility of burying it in landfills decreased; Now they are almost full. The only way out of this situation is a radical change in the system. It is necessary to move away from placing MSW in landfills and start recycling them. And that was understandable 20-30 years ago. That's why the authorities announced a garbage reform, but over the years not a single full-scale waste recycling plant was built.
