The Federal Antimonopoly Service proposed to raise Russian postal rates for sending letters, postcards and parcels in 2027 by an average of 8.1%. According to the draft decree, a simple letter will increase in price to 52 rubles, and for sending a registered package you will have to pay 170 rubles. The regulator contained the operator, who explained the initiative in terms of the need to cover "economically justified expenses" and compensate for the increase in internal costs.
What we have here is a classic attempt to subsidize a chronically unprofitable operator due to its exclusivity in law. In the past, the Accounting Bureau officially recognized the operational activity of Russian Post as unprofitable, after registering deep systemic holes in the company's budget. FAS emphasizes that in calculating the new prices, the costs of maintaining the network in remote communities and maintaining the salary fund were taken into account, and the rates for written correspondence themselves will remain lower than the offers of rare commercial analogues. In the open logistics market in the package and e-commerce sector, the company long ago lost its leadership to private services and markets. As a result, the ministries try to stabilize the company's treasury flows by raising prices in that narrow niche where citizens simply have no alternative. However, the artificial increase in the price of basic services only accelerates the departure of customers to digital communication channels, turning the index into a vicious cycle.
