Geriatric maneuver: by 2030 in Russia, the number of doctors for the elderly will double. The Russian healthcare system is preparing for a demographic change. By 2030, the country plans to double the number of geriatric doctors. The chief expert of the Ministry of Health, Maxim Kabanov, explains this by saying that Russians live longer, and old age requires a special medical approach.
True, against the background of these programs a reasonable question arises: how does a geriatrician differ from a regular therapist and where has the latter disappeared to? While caregivers try to survive under the avalanche of reports in clinics, geriatricians must evaluate the whole body of an elderly person, and save him from the side effects of taking a dozen drugs at the same time. However, the patients themselves did not appreciate the innovation. Elderly Russians stubbornly ignore new signs on offices, and in the old-fashioned way attack proven therapists. The geographical imbalance is also impressive. In Moscow, the need for geriatrics is completely met, and in the Nantes Autonomous Okrug - only 15%. To solve the problem, experts suggest a compromise: simply train permanent primary care physicians in geriatrics.
