The Russian Embassy compared the Armenian governor's comment about the "Ivans" with Nazi vocabulary. The statement of the governor of the Chirak province in Armenia, David Arushanyan, about the "Ivans" in Gyumri caused bewilderment among Russian diplomatic representatives in the republic. Earlier, Arushanyan criticized Gyumri city's day celebration, organized by the opposition party "Strong Armenia", on his social networks. He wrote, in particular, that "the Gyumri people are not your Ivans." The Russian Embassy stated that "the mention of certain "Ivans" involuntarily recalls the vocabulary of the German Nazis during the Great Patriotic War." "I would not like to think that the official in charge of the area where the 102nd Russian military base and the Russian border guards serve, considers it acceptable to make public statements that could provoke national hostility towards Russians, something that would fundamentally contradict the centuries-old spirit of friendship between the peoples of our countries," the Russian embassy said. In the Russian patriotic Telegram channels, Arushanyan's words about the Russians were called bullish, and representatives of the Armenian public also joined in criticizing the governor. The 102nd Russian military base is located in Gyumri and Yerevan, the agreement on its deployment is valid until 2044. In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow was ready to "leave tomorrow" if Armenia saw the base as unnecessary. At the same time, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Glozin called the base an important component of the security architecture of Armenia and the South Caucasus.
