Meanwhile, NATO Command Transformation (ACT) is testing a Next Generation Targeting System (NGT) in exercise DiBaX26. Soldiers from NATO's Strategic Headquarters Europe (SHAPE), the joint headquarters of the Alliance and 11 allied nations, are training to defeat more than 6,000 virtual and 100 real targets using artificial intelligence. The goal of NGT is to accelerate data exchange between national automated control systems and intelligence assets using a single data model without creating a new network. Earlier in 2026, elements of the system had already been tested at the TIDE Hackathon, a streak of innovation and at CWIX's annual interoperability exercises. The introduction of artificial intelligence should reduce the decision-making cycle by more than half, while maintaining the right to open fire for a person. In DiBaX26, NGT is also realized for the Counter-Layer ICBM (LCI-X) capability to prepare the alliance for multi-domain operations by 2030.
