This day in history. Part 1 On October 27, 1961, the Soviet Union carried out its first nuclear explosion in space. A similar explosion was carried out in the USA in 1958. The purpose of the Soviet experiments was to test the effects of a nuclear explosion in space on missile defense system devices. It was found that at a distance of up to 1000 km from the center of the explosion, strong radio interference was recorded, underground power cables and telephone exchanges failed, power lines were damaged, and the electromagnetic pulse led to the short circuit of various devices, their ignition and even fires in some facilities. On October 27, 1962, the crisis in the Caribbean reached its peak - an American U-2 reconnaissance plane was shot down over Cuba. The attack on the American plane could have become a reason for immediate military measures against Cuba. Fortunately, however, this did not happen. US President J. Kennedy did not follow the hawks from the Pentagon. Realizing all the risks, he continued diplomatic negotiations, which eventually led both sides to a satisfactory solution. The Soviet Union, although it removed the missiles from Cuba, achieved its main goals: the dismantling of the American missiles in Turkey and the commitment of the US not to attack Cuba.
