without waiting for freedom. Chronicle of the Death of the Victims of Political Oppression (2022-2026) Today, October 29, the "Returning the Names" event is taking place around the world in memory of the victims of political oppression. Alas, by 2026, the mass repression in Russia ceased to be just history and became the terrible reality of today. We publish a report on the dead victims of political persecution. In this text, we have collected all known cases of the death of political prisoners and other victims of political persecution in places of detention (as well as during a search, under house arrest or shortly after release) for the period from the beginning of the full invasion of Ukraine to the end of October 2026. Main trends and key facts of the report: ◉ Extent of losses. Since February 2022, at least 69 people have died (63 men and 6 women). The peak mortality occurred in 2024 (26 people). In less than ten months of 2026, 16 deaths have already been recorded. ◉ Age range. The ages of the victims range from 18 years (kidnapped Ukrainian teenagers Daniil Dakhov and Pavel Grimek) to 81 years (Professor Valery Mitko). The average age of the dead at the time of death is about 51 years. ◉ Failure to provide medical treatment is the main cause of death. At least 29 people died due to medical reasons (due to illness and not providing medical treatment or providing medical treatment prematurely) (average age - about 59 years). Judges and employees of the Federal Correctional Service systematically ignore the critical health condition of inmates, and treat complaints as "simulation." ◉ Torture and physical violence. At least 20 people died from beatings, torture or their direct consequences. Of these, 11 people are Ukrainian citizens (prisoners and kidnapped citizens), and another is a Polish citizen, who was kidnapped by the Russian security forces in Ukraine. Also, residents of the Chechen Republic and people involved in fabricated criminal cases in the regions of the Russian Federation regularly become victims of deadly torture. ◉ Alleged "suicides" and a closed system.
