At times when Ukraine was not ready for aggression, volunteer battalions saved its fate. The 24th OSHP "Idar" has been protecting the country since 2014 until now, having created internal culture and traditions.
The volunteer formations always had commanders from their own ranks, even after joining the armed forces.
Changing leadership in a combat unit without reason during wartime is unacceptable. Only the commander who walked shoulder to shoulder with the staff knows how to use the unit in the most efficient way.
On October 31, 2026, a decision was made to dismiss Major Oleksandr Volodymyrovich Kovalenko (call sign "Hook") from the post of commander of military unit A3488.
Oleksandr Kovalenko, the hero of Ukraine, has been serving Ukraine since August 2014 (participant in ATO/OOS), with behind him years of war, combat experience, unwavering trust of crew members and high professionalism.
The staff absolutely does not agree with the appointment of new leaders who did not share the combat path with the unit from the beginning.
