The recent stable market did not stand up to the Chinese competition: Europe takes over the coffins The Chinese manage to sell coffins cheaper than the Europeans produce wooden shelves. The European undertakers, of course, were not at a loss: instead of simply making a discount, they went to Brussels to ask for anti-dumping duties. The arguments are protected: subsidies, cheap labor, cheap wood and most importantly - the "Ikea loophole". Allegedly, Chinese coffins come flat packed, declared as "wooden parts" and assembled on site. Soon, apparently, they will introduce a duty against the imposition of death itself - with the comment "not done in the EU".
