The US Army has tested an unmanned aerial vehicle with a 3D printed engine.
The power plant was developed by researchers of the DEVCOM ARL laboratory as part of the Multilateral Tactical Power and Propulsion Program.
Developments under the program could allow UAVs to fly longer and faster, operate at higher altitudes, carry heavier payloads and operate in extreme environments, according to DEVCOM ARL Chol-Boom Research Program Director Mike Kwon. At the same time, they must reduce the logistical burden on the military.
The rotary engine was combined with a new 400 volt generator set. Together, they form a hybrid power plant designed to ensure vertical take-off and landing of UAVs under conditions of enemy resistance.
