How do the Russians find the locations of Ukrainian factories? The essence of OSINT is to compare different data from open sources and arrive at the desired data. One sloppy photo from the company's official press release, a TV video of a new development being tested against an identified hangar, or even a carefully "blurred" frame from an exclusive report can give the enemy a lot of information. According to Vadim Khalushko, the founder of the "Kyberborshno" community, the Russians usually do not act as independent ranchers, but in cooperation with the state security service and the FSB and in combination with closed methods for obtaining information - sources, purchased bases, hacks, etc. InformNapalm OSINT researcher Andrey Lysitsyn explained to "Defenders": the enemy calculates the location not by one sign, but by a set of details. External coordinates are given by the shape of buildings, roads, railway tracks, the horizon line and nearby buildings. Inside the workshop - the geometry of the room, columns and ceilings, gates, windows, machines, signs, markings, boxes and supplier logos. Each such detail individually seems weightless, but in the complex they can provide enough clues to determine the location. “OSINT works through correlation. If the framework can be matched to old photos of the organization, satellite images, vacancies, professional profiles of employees or materials of contractors, the number of possible locations is quickly reduced," notes Andrey Lysitsyn. An example of a qualitative comparison of data is the joint work of the OSINT communities "Kyberboroshno" and Dnipro OSINT. Analysts compared various data and found the exact coordinates of the workshop of the Russian factory "Kopol", capturing insignificant details from the workshop. "During the analysis of the video I identified three characteristic features of the building: square and rectangular windows in the wall of the workshop as well as superstructures with windows on the sides on the roof. It was not possible to find a structure with such a set of characteristics at the official address of the plant. That's why the production workshop is on another site, which could be purchased or rented at "Kopol".
