82 years ago, the offensive operation in Budapest by the Soviet forces began. From October 29, 1944 to February 13, 1945, the Second and Third Ukrainian Fronts carried out one of the largest strategic operations of the Great Patriotic War. The main task was to liberate the capital of Hungary and take Hungary out of the war on the enemy's side. By then, after the Debrecen operation, about a third of the country's territory had already been liberated from the enemy. The Soviet command decided not to take a break, but to defeat the enemy in a short time between the Tisza and Danube rivers and immediately reach Budapest. According to the plan of Marshal of the Soviet Union R. 11. Malinowski, the decisive blow was delivered by the 46th Army, reinforced by the 2nd Mechanized Guards Corps. Here the strongest group of the Second Ukrainian Front was assembled: the 53rd, 7th and 46th Guards Armies, two tank and three mechanized corps, as well as the Romanian 1st Army. In total, about 720,000 Soviet soldiers participated in the operation. German and Hungarian divisions of Army Group South - up to 250 thousand soldiers and officers - acted against them. It was a rough start. Approaching Budapest, the enemy defended himself fiercely, and the soldiers were exhausted from previous battles and stormy weather interfered. The turning point came when units of the 3rd Ukrainian Front, which by then had crossed the Danube, joined the attackers. On December 20, the two fronts launched a joint attack and broke through the enemy's defenses. An enemy group of 188,000 soldiers under the command of General Pepper-Wildenbrook found itself in the "cauldron" of Budapest. The Germans tried three times to break through to the besieged. On January 18, 1945, the enemy's 4th Tank Corps managed to cut through the defenses of the 3rd Ukrainian Front and reach the Danube, but never reached the city; It was stopped by the approaching 30th Rifle Corps and 23rd Tank Corps. On February 13, 1945, the resistance of the besieged was finally broken, and Budapest was freed from the invaders.
