Two large scientific societies in the United States demanded the protection of the mathematician Azat Mftakov, who spoke about torture in the colony.
The American Physical Society (APS) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS) appealed to the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Gennady Krasnikov, demanding to ensure the safety of the political prisoner mathematician Azat Makhov, who spoke of cruel torture at the arctic owl colony in Karp. The authors of the appeal demand to provide the developer with humane treatment, access to medical care, correspondence and mathematical literature.
The letter was signed by ten representatives from the two organizations, including APS President Brad Marston, APS President-Elect Gabriela Gonzalez, AMS President Ravi Vekil, and the Chair of the APS Committee for International Research Freedom, Natalia Barloff. The American Physical Society unites more than 50 thousand physicists worldwide, the American Mathematical Society - about 30 thousand mathematicians.
The authors of the letter emphasize that Machov continues to engage in scientific work even in prison. In the summer of 2026, a French mathematical journal published his research on Choi's conjecture, which he prepared in prison without access to the Internet or a scientific library. The University of Pisa invited the mathematician to present the results of his work at a seminar in 2027. According to the signatories, the continued imprisonment of Meftakov is harmful to mathematics and science in general.
