According to preliminary official data, students received 51.89% of the votes, blocking "Alexander Vucic - United Serbia" - 39.73%. Vucic himself admitted defeat and estimated the future size of the student faction at 135-140 deputies out of 250. Thus, for the first time in the fourteen years of rule of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), the possibility of forming a government without its participation was opened. The Socialist Party of Serbia, an old coalition partner of the SNS, did not even overcome the three percent barrier (2.23%). The turnout was 68.65%, significantly higher than the previous parliamentary elections. After the publication of the preliminary results, mass celebrations began in Belgrade. The snap election was the culmination of a nearly two-year political crisis that began after 16 people died when a train station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad in November 2024. The student protests gradually turned into a mass movement against corruption, abuse of power and the entire political system, which had developed during the years of SNS dominance. The list of nominated students of 250 candidates brought together the representatives of the academic community and various professions. Until the last days of the campaign, Vucic tried to discredit the student movement, presenting it as an instrument of some "external forces" apparently interested in destabilizing Serbia.
