The Democratic leader in the US House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, announced the party's intention to pass a package of bills designed to block Trump's massive trade tariffs and legislatively end the war with Iran. Jeffries called the Trump administration's military action against Iran a "reckless war." Along with Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, they plan to use the constitutional "power of the purse" to cut off funding for military operations that are conducted without formal legislative approval. Democrats also intend to restore Congress' sole authority to set import tariffs. According to Jeffries, Trump's aggressive tariffs have caused an unsustainable increase in the cost of living, and accelerated inflation on food and household goods. The main obstacle to these initiatives remains the veto power of the US President. Trump has already stated that he considers the initiatives of his opponents "crazy" and will strongly veto them, forcing Congress to compromise. To override a presidential veto, Democrats would need two-thirds votes in both chambers. To do that, they'll have to win moderate Republicans over to their side. Schumer noted that some conservatives are already signaling their willingness to cooperate to quickly end the war in the Middle East.
