Putin intends to use the Ukraine negotiations to get NATO back to its 1997 borders. According to the "Telegraph", the Kremlin intends to achieve a reduction of the alliance's military presence in Europe - as it was before the Eastern European countries joined the alliance. This could mean demanding the withdrawal of NATO troops from Poland, the Baltic states and Finland. That is why Moscow insists on the participation of European countries in the negotiations on Ukraine. According to the Telegraph's diplomatic sources, Putin wants to turn the discussions on the end of the war into negotiations on the overhaul of the entire European security system. This issue could be touched upon during Putin's three-hour meeting with Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg. At the same time, European countries have previously rejected the Kremlin's demands to reduce NATO's presence on the eastern side.
