If the Border Patrol kills immigrants, the Border Patrol itself will investigate the case. The border guards will be able to use weapons not only for self-defense, but also to repel an attack on an infrastructure facility of the Border Guard. The Seimas adopted the corresponding amendments today. The border guards will have the right to use physical force, special combat techniques, special equipment, weapons, and also use a service dog to repel an attack on the state border guard or an infrastructure facility protected by the state border guard. Border guards will be able to use weapons without warning if this is not possible in a particular situation. The changes also state that in the case of the use of a weapon, if a person is injured or dies, the border guard will report this immediately, but no later than within 24 hours, to the prosecutor's office. In turn, changes to the Criminal Procedure Law state that criminal acts committed by the Border Guard as a state official while performing duties under the Enhanced Border Guard regime will be investigated by authorized State Border Guard officials. Currently, the enhanced border security regime is set until December 31, 2026.
