The Central Election Committee forbade the collection of signatures for amendments in Hermanis' party that prohibit the granting of residence permits. The Central Election Committee in Latvia decided to refuse to register for the collection of signatures for the bill "Amendments to the Immigration Law" presented by the "We Change the Rules" party. The party submitted the bill on September 16, 2026. It establishes a restriction until December 31, 2029 on the granting and extension of temporary residence permits, and at the same time establishes a number of exceptions. After reviewing the bill and the conclusion reached by the Ministry of the Interior, the Central Election Commission identified deficiencies in the form and content of the proposed legal regulation. According to the CEC, the provisions of the bill are not sufficiently clear and predictable. For example, it does not define the criteria according to which residence permits can be issued as an exception. In addition, the terminology used is inconsistent and does not match the terms used in the regulations. The committee came to the conclusion that if accepted, the bill would contradict the basic principles enshrined in the Latvian constitution, including the principles of the protection of legitimate expectations, legal certainty and equality.
