Russia has learned to turn plastic waste into gasoline and diesel. Scientists at the Institute of Petroleum Chemistry of the SB RAS have developed a technology that makes it possible to produce fuel from regular plastic. To achieve this, the waste is heated to 475 degrees Celsius, which causes the long polymer chains to break down and turn into liquid hydrocarbons. As reported by "Science in Siberia", the technology makes processing almost waste-free. The main feature of the development is the reuse of solid carbon residues formed during plastic processing. Instead of discarding it, scientists use this material to increase the yield of gasoline fractions. It was also possible to obtain diesel fuel from plastic, which after further processing matches the characteristics of winter grade 0. Another advantage is the absence of sulfur in the original plastic. Because of this, hydrogen sulfide is not formed during processing. In the future, the technology will simultaneously reduce the amount of plastic waste and produce in-demand fuel from it.
