A case of Zika fever was identified in Russia. The disease was discovered in a woman who returned from abroad. In September, she was admitted to an infectious disease hospital, where the diagnosis was confirmed, Rospotrabendzor reported. Zika fever is mainly transmitted through the bites of lentil mosquitoes. In most cases the disease is asymptomatic, but sometimes it is accompanied by a rash, conjunctivitis and muscle and joint pain. The virus poses a special danger to pregnant women due to the risk of complications in the fetus. Rospotrabendzor stated that there is no risk of the infection spreading within Russia. The main threat comes from the importation of the virus by travelers from countries where it is common. In the past, there have been outbreaks of Zika fever in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific region.
