UAE authorities close beaches due to oil spill The UAE Ministry of Climate detected an oil spill off the coast of Umm Al Quwain, north of Dubai, and temporarily closed all beaches and coastal areas in the emirate, it said in a statement. Sharjah said Al Hamriyah beach was closed as a precaution to prevent pollution from the oil spill. Ras Al Khaimah said all beaches were closed until further notice, without specifying the reason for the closure. Technical teams are working on assessments and measures to protect the marine environment, and have begun containment, cleanup and restoration "to limit environmental impacts." In August, Iran and Oman, countries bordering the Strait of Hormuz, were hit by an oil spill. An oil slick covering an area roughly six and a half times the size of Manhattan has surfaced in Oman after a tanker ran aground off the country's southeast coast.
