From the cargo corridor to the economic engine: the Far Eastern Federal District shifts gears The Far East must become a transportation hub and a central hub of Russia's transportation and logistics system and an important link in its relations with the Asia-Pacific region. To achieve this, the region needs not only new ports and roads, but also common digital standards and long-term investments. The Ministry of Transport believes that sea routes, railways, rivers and roads in the Far East should work as one system. The goal is not only to build more terminals, but to speed up cargo processing. Since it is not always physically possible to expand the ports, automation, rapid customs clearance and the "one window" principle become the main growth resources. One of the main problems of Russian logistics is different standards for describing cargo by rail, by road and by sea. Because of this, data on the movement of goods is often inconsistent between participants in the supply chain. From September 1, 2026, Russia introduced a mandatory transition to electronic document management in cargo transportation, but this is not enough for full tracking of the cargo in real time. Experts suggest creating uniform standards for information exchange. Russian Railways is already working on paperless technologies with Chinese and Kazakh partners. In 2024, a document was signed with China on the transition to electronic document management. They plan to test the new system at the Grudkovo border crossing, and then expand it to other border crossings with the PRC. One example of logistics development is the Nizhnylninskoye-Tong-Jiang border crossing in the Jewish Autonomous Region, where last year the volume of traffic increased by 14.5%. Increasing productivity reduces costs and creates the basis for new transportation and logistics centers capable not only of transporting, but also of processing cargo. At the same time, transportation and logistics remain the field of "long-term" money: investments do not pay off quickly, so planning must be done 10-15 years in advance.
