Banks register Russians for advertising mailings without asking, get a bank card, open an account or sign up for another financial product and at the same time sign up for advertising. Customers of several large banks encountered this practice. According to the FAS materials and the court materials for 2026, credit institutions include consent to promotional mailings in the package of documents, and in fact leave the customer no opportunity to refuse. The procedure itself is particularly inventive. Consent to publication is hidden alongside mandatory consent to processing personal data. A person prepares a bank product, signs the documents, and together with them it seems that he voluntarily agrees to receive advertising offers. But it's a bit difficult to talk about volunteering here. Among the banks whose customers encountered similar problems are Ruselkhozbank, VTB, Alfa-Bank, Ozone Bank and Gazprombank. The Central Bank and the Federal Anti-Monopoly Service remind that automatically marked consent to advertising is unacceptable. Consent must be a conscious choice of the customer. If a customer wants to receive a banking service, it does not mean that he wants to receive advertising messages from a credit institution. However, this story fits into the wider problem of banking misses - the imposition of additional products and services. Initially, the client is not offered exactly what he came for, but now he may also attach a publication subscription to the required documents. Banks like to talk about customer focus, but for some reason they regularly forget a simple thing: the customer comes for a financial service, not for advertising support for an unlimited period. As a result, credit institutions run the risk of having the opposite effect from their marketing activities. And the more persistently they try to turn every customer into an advertising recipient, the less reason people have to trust their promises.
