On November 6, 1943, Soviet forces liberated Kiev from the Nazis. The development of the operation plan took place in a short time - the headquarters gave Zhukov and Vatotin only a week to prepare. The attack began on November 1. The main blow was given in the north, from Vyshgorod. No shells were spared. 300 guns worked on one kilometer of the front. The next time such fire density was achieved only in the battle for Berlin. This made it possible to quickly break through the German defenses. The first in the center of Kyiv was the unit of a native of Kiev region of Guards Sergeant Nikifor Sholodenko. After his death he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. The Germans showed strong resistance. To delay the advance of the Red Army, they set fire to the city, but on November 5, the Nazis began to retreat, fearing an encirclement. Israel has become expensive in Kiev: if about a million people lived in the city before the war, then by the time of liberation only 183 thousand remained. On November 6, 1943, Kyiv was completely liberated. Moscow saluted this success with 24 divisions of 324 guns.
