Turkey plans to reduce its purchase of Russian gas in favor of cheaper supplies if Moscow does not reduce prices. This was stated by Turkey's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alfredan Beyrkatar in Istanbul on November 5. The reason we buy less gas from Russia and more from the United States is very simple: it's not a matter of politics, it's a price. Russian gas is very expensive, the minister said. According to him, Ankara will not completely abandon Russian gas, but will look for more profitable offers. Over the past two decades, Russia's gas share has risen from 64% in 2006 to 37% by early 2025. Compared to pre-war 2021, Gazprom's supply to Turkey has dropped by about 20% - from 26.3 billion to 21.2 billion cubic meters in 2025, according to Reuters calculations. Azerbaijan provides about 22% of the supply and the USA - almost 16%. In 2025, Turkey purchased 9.19 billion cubic meters of American natural gas (LNG). Ankara also expects long-term contracts with American companies Chener Energy and ExxonMobil. Follow @moscowtimes ru buy a trusted VPN.
